Stone Country Press have released the first volume of a new Scottish Climbing Year Book range.

I'd hear about the idea for a year book late last year and was expecting something along the lines of the first stone country book with images and stories. When my review copy arrived I was surprised to find so much more.

The book is divided into four sections for winter, trad, bloc and sport with a short run down of significant repeats and first ascents. What surprised me was the inclusion of topos (lots of them!) to some of the key areas – no doubt an incentive to get out an try some of the routes yourself. Some small special features are spread through the book adding to the contents variety (I wont spoil them). Really there's no limit to where these could go in the future. Epic of the year. Belayer of the year. Injury of the year (self inflicted tooling injures are always my favourite). Driller/chopper of the year. These could equally apply to other sections other than just winter...

My only criticism is that I miss the stories of personal epics, but these are harder to acquire. Hopefully we'll see more of the Scottish scene contributing to this publication next year to continue to develop it into something special.

The Scottish Climbing Year Book is Priced £6.99 and is available from the stonecountry website.
